The Girl Scout program can change the way girls see the world and their place in it. Girls learn the importance of personal responsibility, the value of goal-setting, the spirit of teamwork, and the thrill of accomplishment. The Girl Scout program is based on the Girl Scout Promise and Law and four fundamental goals that encourage girls to:

Develop to their full potential.

Relate to others with increasing understanding, skill, and respect.

Develop a meaningful set of values to guide their actions and to provide for sound decision-making.

Contribute to the improvement of society.

Girl Scouts of the USA is the preeminent organization dedicated solely to girls – all girls – where, in an accepting nurturing environment, girls build leadership skills for success in the real world.

Girl Scouts in Baumholder fall under the USA Girl Scouts Overseas - North Atlantic, which serves about 6500 girls in 55 neighborhoods in Germany, the United Kingdom, Belgium, the Netherlands, Italy, Spain, Portugal, and Turkey.

For more than 95 years, adults from around the globe have given back to the Girl Scouts of the USA by helping build our leaders of tomorrow. Our volunteers are inspiring, invaluable, and they have a profound effect on everyone they help. Quite simply, there would be no Girl Scouting without them! Whether you have a day, a weekend, a month or more, the time you devote to Girl Scouts will instill in girls leadership skills that will last a lifetime. We're looking for volunteers who represent the diversity of the world we live in—men as well as women, adults of all ages, all racial and ethnic backgrounds and of course our treasured alumnae—anyone who wants to make a difference in their community.

1.Meeting called to order at 10:55 am at the Scout Hut.
2.CeCe Clark announced that the post tree lighting was tonight (December 1st). All girl scouts were meeting at the hut at 3:00 to practice. Plan to have parents pick up girls at 4:15.
3.Calendars have arrived. CeCe to send out selling schedule.
4.Heidelberg Trip: The Heidelberg council has invited our girls to sleepover night at their hut. BCSC has awarded us $999 to off-set the costs of the trip. It was decided that we’d put this trip off until March, when the weather may be a little warmer.
5.Cookie Kick-Off: January 17th. Child care reservations for younger siblings are being accepted at the Respite Center. Reminder that each troop is responsible for their own booths (clean-up, set-up, etc…) We are trying to secure Wetzel for the location.
6.Thinking Day Update: February 21st, Saturday, at Wetzel Elementary. Event will run 1-3, with set-up starting at 12 noon. Please list all ingredients for the food that is being prepared (due to allergies). Committee will be dropping off presentation boards to the hut; each troop can grab one. Passports are also being made by the committee. Those will be available at the February leaders meeting. Troop Country Assignments: Costa Rica (Troop 808); Iceland/Canada (Troop 484); Egypt (Troop 243); Australia (Troop 809); Thailand (Troop 077); Fiji (Troop 505); Jordan or Kenya (Troop 416).

Thinking Day Update: Theme is “We can stop the spread of Diseases”.

Tentative Location: Wetzel Multi-purpose room at WES.

Troops should plan the following: food samples, display (a tri-fold, cardboard, display will be provided from committee), swap-it’s, presentation and performance.

Troops should also know at least 5 common phrases from their country (Hello, Good-bye, Please, Thank-You, etc…) and provide a sticker or stamp to mark each “tourist’s” passport.

Committee will provide the passports and travel bags (for collections of materials and swap-its).

Note: Food and Swap-its are only for GIRL SCOUTS- not families!

The committee selected 7 different countries from 6 continents.

Those at the leaders meeting were given first choice of countries:

o Costa Rica- 808
o Iceland/Canada (Troop 484)
o Egypt (Troop 243)
o Australia (Troop 809)
o Fiji (Troop 505)

Girls Scouts will meet at 1500 at the SCOUT HUT to practice the carol!

The Girl Scouts are collectively going to sing “O Christmas Tree” in both English and German.

It was decided that the Daisys and Brownies would sign the 1st verse in English, the Juniors and Cadettes would sing the 1st verse in German, and then everyone would sing the 1st verse again in English.

1. Volunteer Applications- These need to be turned in ASAP. If you didn’t turn it in at the meeting, you can leave it in the office so Jennifer can pick up and turn in.
2. Troop Consultants: Daisy: Deborah Rasmussen; Brownie: Suzanne Martinez; Junior: Melinda Hodge
3. Treasurer Report: Allison passed around hard copy of her report. Calendars needed to be paid for upfront. Most troops had enough money in their account to cover it, and those that didn’t received an “advance” from OCC. Troop 808 needed an $80 advance.
4. Hut Kaper Chart: This was postponed as no one had brought their information. PLEASE bring this to the next meeting. It’s very important that everyone using the Hut takes the time to leave it better than they found it, after each meeting.
5. Fundraiser Updates:
o Be A Reader: Booklets ordered and have been mailed to OCC ($1.75 every completed book & $1.50 every subscription)
o Calendar Sales Booths: Sign-up will be sent out upon MWR approval (wholesale cost: $2.00 ea pocket & $3.00 ea wall)
 Tentative dates: Nov 6 & 7, Nov 13 & 14, Nov 15 & 16
 Tentative locations: Commissary, PX , and CMR
 Calendars will retail for: $3.50 (pocket) & $5 (wall)
o Cookie Orders Due- Most troops turned these in during meeting. It was advised that no more than 100 boxes per girl be ordered. It was also advised to take the deployment, and it’s impact on sales, into account. It’s better to sell out then be stuck with cases of cookies after the 4-week window.
 “Cookie Premier” (kickoff) update: January 17th (Super Sat. care)
 “Cookie Premier” Planning Committee: Chair: Cecilia Clark. Volunteers to help her included: Anna Salinas, Crystal Stevens, Maggie Tuck and Marsha Campbell.
 Activities: will be Brownie based. Older troops (Juniors and Cadettes) will need to plan activities for their troops, so that those girls can earn their respective patches.
6. Community Service:
o Breast Cancer Awareness & patch distribution- Jennifer gave patches out to troops. She ran short so will order more.
o Baumholder Chapel's Country Fair Oct 10th: donation of apples & baked cakes, & work booths POC: Kristen Sellers 06783-6-1570. Great opportunity for the girls to do community service.
o Smith PTO Fall Fest Oct 17th: need certified babysitters to help out with volunteer child care mle620@yahoo.com or jessica.bonds@yahoo.com. HOWEVER, it was discussed that girls would need to be 13 AND have taken the Red Cross Babysitting Course in order to do this. Melinda Hodge, Cadette Troop, said most of her girls were 11-12 so that would prohibit them. However Melinda did state that she’d like to get her girls to take the Babysitting Course.
o Blankets for Babies (Red Cross): Donations of time, thread, material, and completed blankets POC: Judy Tarantino 01515-246-6589 (cell) or 485-1760. Supplies for no-sew fleece blankets are available at Oriental Trading.
o Whirled Peace Day (Wetzel Elementary): Need volunteers. Contact Andrea Richardson for more info.
7. Thinking Day
o Chairs: Cantresa Gillespie and Suzanne Martinez
o Committee Volunteers: Jennifer Devincey and Celia Romick
o Committee is going to get together and report plans at Nov meeting so troops have adequate time to have their girls plan their presentation.
o Troops need to have their countries chosen by December’s meeting
8. Group Share: Jennifer introduced “group share” as a way for leaders to network and brainstorm about specific topics. This month the topic was DUES- how much and when:
o Troop 484- $20 per month- includes all activities
o Troop 809- $20 at the beginning of the year; $1 per week; parents pay for activities as they go
o Troop 243- $5 per month
o Troop 077- $10 per month or $80 for the year (which is a $10 savings)
o Troop 505- $5 per month- girls must EARN that money at home by doing chores
o Troop 808- $10 per month or $80 for the year (which is a $10 savings)
9. Please remind girls to wear their uniforms proudly to school on meeting days. It’s a great way for them to show off their accomplishments and also to show “Girl Scout” pride.
10. Jennifer addressed parental concerns: leaders were asked to present themselves in a professional manner, including starting meetings on time and being prepared with materials ready for the girls when they arrive.
11. Meeting day/time has been CHANGED. We will now meet the first Monday of the month at 1030 at the Scout Hut.
12. Other business:
o Copier in Scout office is broken. We can make copies at ACS but you should bring your own paper.
o Amanda Thompson announced that she is ERD’ing back to the states. She will be stepping down in her role as the OCC. Therefore, Cecelia Clark as the OCC-Elect, will step up to replace her.

8. Training Opportunities: go to usaga/na.org; select “Adult Learning”. All leaders should be keeping track on their training on the white cards given to them at leader training in September.
9. Troop Reports were handed in. Those troops not represented should email report to CeCe and Jennifer.
10. Service Projects-
o American Red Cross is still looking for volunteers to make baby blankets. See Judy Tarintino at ARC. Blankets need to measure 36x44.
o Angel Tree sponsored by Baumholder Community Spouses’ Club- donations are needed as well as volunteering to wrap the gifts in December. Trees are located at the PX and Power Zone.

11. Girl Scout Leadership Experience: CeCe attended the training and brought back a hand-out titled “Leadership Keys”. The three points are: Discover, Connect & Take Action.
12. Girl Scout Leader Social Activity: It was suggested that all the leaders and OCC go out for lunch at the DFAC after our next meeting (approx 1200) December 1st.
13. Open Discussion: Due to the current deployment, it was suggested that we sponsor a Boy Scout/Girl Scout dance in lieu of the Father Daughter dance.

1. Training meeting started at ACS with Volunteer training.
2. Leadership training continued at the Scout Hut. An ice breaker was done, “Candy Connections”, to get the group familiar with each other.
3. Since time was running short, it was decided that a working lunch would be best. The OCC’s provided lunch for all the leaders.
4. Cecelia Clark asked the leaders what they thought their job/role was as a GS leader. Ideas throw out were:
ð To model the rules of GS- The GS Laws and Promise
ð Make sure the girls have fun- keep the focus on the girls
ð Develop Character, Courage and Confidence
ð Keep Girls safe
ð Enrich a sense of “sisterhood”
ð Attend leadership training and development opportunities
ð Make sure all girl & adults are registered members and have fill out the health assessment
ð Record Troop Activities
ð Keep OCC in the loop
ð Represent GS in a positive light at all times
ð Communicate with parents & OCC
ð Should like kids and like to be around them
ð Facilitate “Girls Leading”
5. Cecelia handed out the “Volunteer Agreement” and asked everyone to fill it out and return it at our October Meeting.
6. There are still open positions that need to be filled: Troop Consultants and Hut Manager. Please see the OCC’s if you are interested. There is a detailed job description for each listing in troop leader binder.

· Cookies will need to be ordered at October leaders meeting
· Suggestion was not to order more than 100 per girl; keep the average between 50-100 boxes per GS
· Troops will get to decide what they want to order! Don’t have to order all the flavors if you don’t want to. However, keep in mind that cookies must be ordered in palates- so troop may get a few extra or a few less.
· Kick Off- January 30. OCC’s ordered gifts for each girl- Lip Balms with the Hollywood theme. *SECRET*
· OCC’s are looking for a cookie manager for our council. Shawna Roberts did it last two years, but would like to hand over to someone else. OCC’s ordered a “Director’s Chair” as a “thank you” gift.
· Each troop will also need a “cookie mom” or troop cookie manager. Can not be a leader.
· T-shirts with the logo “That’s a Wrap” are available to order for cookie moms or troop leaders. Cost is $4.35-$5.75 each. Please bring orders with money to October leaders meeting.
15. Agenda for the leaders meetings are in the binders.
16. Troop Field Trips: Any “trip” that isn’t at the regularly schedule meeting location (scout hut or school) will need paperwork filled out.
ð Short Trip- (i.e. Commissary, Downtown Baumholder, etc…) paperwork will take 2 weeks to process. There are different guidelines for each age group (Daisy, Brownie, etc…). See your Troop Binder.
ð Long Trip- (i.e. overnight) will require a 45 day minimum approval time.
ð Before planning a trip, please go over the steps in “Safety Wise”.
ð Cecelia is planning First Aid training.
ð Parent Permission Slips- 1 per girl
ð Trip Budget- see sample in binder (need itemization)
ð Check List for Big Trips- (see binder)
ð Application to operate Trip- (see binder)
ð Long trips require additional insurance (45 days for approval). Troops must cover the policy cost. Very reasonable prices (trip to Spain for 20 girls, 4 adults was approx. $10)

· Jennifer is available to meet one-on-one with each leader to go over questions.
17. Training: Leaders should keep track of all their training on the provided cards in their binders. These cards can be taken with you when you PCS so that you don’t have to retake classes.
18. Uniforms: Leaders should encourage their girls to wear their uniforms to meetings and special events. It was also suggested that the girls be encouraged to wear their uniforms to school on meeting days.
19. European Castles and Palaces Badge
ð Sponsored by Heidelberg Council
ð Girls learn about the history of castles
ð Different requirements for each age group
ð Cost of Badge: $2.50 each
ð OCC’s would like to plan a community trip to the Heidelberg Castle around December-January time frame. Trip would include: two buses from MWR so that parents and siblings can also participate, admission to the castle for girls and leaders, followed by lunch/dinner at a German restaurant and/or ice skating in city center. OCC’s are going to apply for a welfare grant from the BCSC to help pay for a portion of this trip.
20. Troop Money: Each troop has a money bag and a receipt book.
ð No more than $20 petty cash allowed
ð Troops should “deposit” their money weekly into the locked box in the GS office. Allyson will pick up money and deposit into troop account.
ð If funds are needed, please fill out a “request for troop funds” form, found in the office. Allyson needs about a week to process your request.
ð If you choose to purchase things on your own, please keep your receipt for reimbursement. No receipt, no payment.
ð Allyson will give you your troop balance at the leader’s meeting each month. It’s also suggested that you keep track of your own money as well.

Tea Planning

Hello everyone!
The Rheinlander will allow us to decorate tomorrow (Friday) after 2:00. This will make it much less hectic for everyone who is helping to decorate and set up plus they will doing the emergency exercises on Saturday morning and it will be difficult to get on post.

We will meet tomorrow at the Rheinlander at 2:30. I'm thinking it should only take about an hour to set up. Can you please bring tape or string/fishing string if you have it?

FYI: We will not be doing the bags of dirt with the seed packets attached. I checked the PX, BX, and Hela. There was not anything that was "cheap" enough. Hela's price range that was available were mostly in the 1euro price range and the PX/BX just didn't have enough. I really thought it would be easy to find cheap seep packets....guess we need a Walmart around!

Cookie sales update:
The cookie leftovers can be sent downrange to the soldiers if the troop chooses to purchase the cookies at cost. The cost is $2 a box (this is less the $1 troop profit and the .50 to OCC fund).
We are applying for additional cookie sale dates/times. It takes about 1 month for approval. Troop s may choose to sell the remainder of cookies once the approval is received and a schedule is available.

Due to the Fundraiser Paperwork not going through as quickly as expected, the Bowl-A-Thon part of the Girl Scout Birthday Party has been canceled. The Birthday Party will still be held at the Bowling Alley in Baumholder at 5:30pm. Because the fundraiser part will not be availabe, it will be the Troops responsiblity to pay for Shoes, Games, and Pizza. Your troop can either pay out of troop funds OR you can charge each girl $6. Its totally up to you. We ask that each troop bring a cake or cupcakes to feed their Troop. Please RSVP with how many from your troop will be attending by Monday evening so we can let the bowling alley know numbers for pizza and the number of lanes we'll need. Thank You and so very sorry for the short notice.

Here are answers to some of the most Frequently Asked Questions.

Q: What will the new levels be?
A.
Grades K-1 Girl Scout Daisy

Q: Will Girl Scout Daisies this year (07/08) be Daisies again next year?
A: Yes. GSUSA will be designing new program resources specifically for the 1st grade.

Q: Will Girl Scout Daisies be able to participate in the cookie program?
A: Beginning in October 2008, GSUSA will provide age-appropriate guidelines for girls in K-1st grade on participating in the Girl Scout cookie program activities. We do not have any further information at this time.

Q: How will this affect the girls now?
A. It won’t. Girl in all age groups will continue enjoying the experiences they are already engaged in, earning awards and badges as they exist right now. Materials will continue to be available in Girl Scout council shops and online. When the transition timeframe is put into place, girls will have time to complete projects or awards they have already begun at their current age levels, using existing materials.

Q: What about the Bronze, Silver and Gold Awards?
A. Don’t worry! The Girl Scout Bronze, Silver and Gold Awards remain vital awards in Girl Scouting, and they are great awards to teach girls how to Discover, Connect and Take Action as leaders. The Girl Scout Gold Award will remain the highest award. Over the next few years, as the new program materials are developed, the awards will be updated based on the leadership model.

Q: How will the changes impact the volunteer experience?
A. Over the next several years, GSUSA will strive to improve the volunteer experience by:
• Making it easier for busy volunteers to join, stay involved and serve in flexible ways
• Providing user-friendly new materials, resources and training that make it easier for
volunteers to deliver a fun and impact-driven Girl Scout experience.
• Helping volunteers to better see (and show others) the difference they are making in girls’
lives.

Q: Why is Girl Scouts of the USA changing now?
A. Since 1912, Girl Scouts has risen to the challenge of meeting the unique needs of each generation of girls. Girls today are asking for compelling, relevant and impact-driven experiences. This change is part of the next-steps in the Core Business Strategy as expected since 2004. Imagining the power of the Girl Scout Movement speaking in one, consistent, national voice about what we do: leadership development for girls!

Girl Scouts of the USA adopted an updated mission statement at our National Council Session in 2005: Girl Scouting builds girls of courage, confidence and character who make the world a better place. To fulfill this mission and our commitment to girls, we are renewing the Girl Scout experience by making it compelling, relevant and impact-driven for 21-century girls. Thousands of members around the country have contributed ideas and perspectives, culminating in decisions by the National Board of Directors in August 2006. GSUSA will phase in some exciting program changes beginning in the fall of 2008. The most obvious changes will be regrouping the girls into ‘grade levels’, changing the number of years spent in each level and adding a new level called ‘Ambassador’. Uniform changes will come for the Junior level and above (including adults). You will also begin to hear some new phrases such as ‘The Leadership Model’, ‘Girl Scout Pathways’, and ‘Leadership Journeys’. It will be important to grasp these new concepts as GSUSA unfolds more information in the next 10 months. For now, here are some definitions to get started:
The Leadership Model: The leadership model is the new design for what girls do in Girl Scouting and how adult support can strengthen their experiences. It is the road map, displaying all the elements that must be in place to create a positive impact on girls’ lives.
Girl Scout Pathways: A pathway is the way girls and volunteers join Girl Scouting. They can choose from several pathways, including an ongoing troop, destinations, a short-term opportunity, a day or resident camp, a special-interest topic or event, or a virtual (online) connection.
Leadership Journeys: Journeys represent the experiences Girl Scouts engage in to achieve leadership outcomes. For each Girl Scout grade level, GSUSA is creating a series of leadership journeys accompanied by new resources and new awards. Each journey engages girls in exploring a theme through a series of linked experiences that, together, form a whole greater than any one journey activity. Each journey is tied to the Discover, Connect, Take Action format described below.
Keep in mind, GSUSA has defined Girl Scouts as the ‘premier leadership organization for girls’. The focus of every level of the girl program is leadership. The Girl Scout philosophy of leadership is for girls to become the leaders of tomorrow by participating in a 3-fold action plan:
DISCOVER: To understand their values, and use their knowledge and skills to explore their world,
CONNECT: To care about, inspire and team with others locally and globally, and
TAKE ACTION: To act to make the world a better place.

Price: $7.00 (cash only) Must pay and fill out Permission Slip at October 10th meeting.
